Detailed Description
Your professional tour guide meets the group dressed in period costume. We cover 450 years of colorful history: the Ponce de Leon discovery, the pirate days of Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish and English colonial years, and the Victorian Flagler era. We tour all the major sites and stop at the Castillo de San Marcos, the fort that was never captured in battle. St. Augustine was also the first winter resort for the rich and famous during the Gilded Age. Hear how Henry Flagler built the most opulent hotels of the day and turned the city into the “Newport of the South”.
Our second stop will be the Memorial Presbyterian Church. The present Memorial Presbyterian Church building was built by Henry Morrison Flagler, in 1889 in memory of his daughter Jenny Louise Benedict. The Church's architectural style is Venetian Renaissance, as is St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, Italy. This style is evident in the huge copper dome rising about 150 feet overhead and the ornate terra cotta frieze done by Italian artists. The wood-work is all hand carved Santo Domingo mahogany. The structure itself is solid poured concrete walls and buttresses with no internal reinforcement. The Aeolian Skinner Pipe Organ that graces the sanctuary of Memorial Presbyterian Church was installed in 1970, replacing the original Roosevelt instrument installed in 1889. The organ console has four manuals (keyboards) with pedal, seventy registers, and eight divisions, and a total of ninety ranks of pipes—over five thousand. The largest pipes are thirty-two feet tall.
